Tuvalu, my Tuvalu the land across the sea
Surrounded by the ocean, you mean so much to me
I miss these coral atolls with gentle swaying palms
With smiling gentle people, so peaceful and so calm.

Tuvalu, my Tuvalu I always think of you
Wherever I may travel across the sea so blue
And deep inside me I know that it will be
Tuvalu, my Tuvalu you always think of me.

Your sons and daughters travel away to distant lands
They leave their homes and families so that they will understand
To study truth and knowledge in sadness and in pain, and then
Tuvalu, my Tuvalu you welcome them home again.

Tuvalu, my Tuvalu may God’s blessings be on you
To give you strength and courage to see the future through
And may our blessed people hold their heads up high
Tuvalu, my Tuvalu I will love you till I die.

CONTEMPORARY IMAGES OF FUNAFUTI, TUVALU

Since the following pictures (below) were taken in 2000, there had been a number of changes in the Tuvalu landscape in less than two years!

The people of Tuvalu (Funafuti) now have paved roads, speed humps and street signs. The capital of Tuvalu, Funafuti, is now lit with street lights from one end to the other. Robert Girdo and his wife Kerrie returned from Tuvalu on 24th May 2002 and they have kindly made available many excellent updated images on their great Tuvalu 2002 Web site www.girdo.com/tuvalu taken in May 2002.

TUVALU AND GLOBAL WARMING

I hear the waves on our island shore

They sound much louder than they did before

A rising swell flecked with foam

Threatens the existence of our island home.

A strong wind blows in from a distant place

The palm trees bend like never before

Our crops are lost to the rising sea

And water covers our humble floor.

Our people are leaving for a distant shore

And soon Tuvalu may be no more

Holding on to the things they know are true

Tuvalu my Tuvalu, I cry for you.

And as our people are forced to roam

To another land to call their home

And as you go to that place so new

Take a little piece of Tuvalu with you.

Tuvalu culture is rare and unique

And holds a message we all should seek

Hold our culture way up high

And our beloved Tuvalu will never die.

Will surely come true

And I wish for happiness

To live and love as one
