Micronesia Music - Enjoy The Groove

The Federated States of Micronesia music is very different in each of the four states. In recent years, Europop, country music, and reggae have all had an effect on the popular music of the Federated States of Micronesia.

The only major industries in the Federated States of Micronesia are small-scale farming (copra, or dried coconut meat), and fishing. This means that the country has to import many of its basic needs.

Where Is Micronesia?

Micronesia takes up 6.7 million square kilometers of the Pacific Ocean, which is almost the same size as the United States. The area has 4% of the world's coral reefs and 480 coral species, which is 60% of all known species.

It is also home to about 650,000 people whose jobs and economies depend a lot on reef systems working well.

But these reefs are in danger from both local and global stressors, and their long-term health is put at risk by a lack of resources and management skills.

In 2006, leaders from the area came up with the Micronesia Challenge, which asked countries and regions to save at least 30% of their near-shore marine resources and 20% of their land resources by 2020.

The Federated States of Micronesia, The Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Republic of Palau, the U.S. Territory of Guam, and the U.S. Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands are all part of the Challenge.

The Nature Conservancy in the Pacific Islands has more information about what they are doing in Micronesia.

Micronesia Music And Dance

In terms of music and dance, Micronesia is the part of Oceania that is least known. On some of Kiribati's atolls, both men and women performed dances at events like the opening of new meeting halls, boat model races, and meetings between different local groups.

Active participation and choreographic roles depend on how good a dancer or singer is and how high up in society they are. The ruoia is a series of slow dances done while standing up. The arms and hands are used most of the time.

During the opening and main dances, up to six leading male or female dancers pose as "gliding frigate birds" in front of the other dancers, who are lined up according to their status in their patriclans (kinship groups).

Long poems that have been practiced are chanted by all of the dancers. Often, the last lines of dance songs are shouted, and the words of the last dance in a series are read out loud the whole time. There are also stick dances and dances done while sitting.

The arm and hand movements in the sitting dances are the same as those in the standing dances. The dance moves don't have anything to do with the words of the songs, which performers and audience members don't usually understand.

The words to traditional dance songs were "given" to the composers by the spirits of their ancestors (anti) during special ceremonies and probably while they were in a trance.

Since the beginning of the 20th century, people in the area have been singing European church songs in more than one part.

As a result of a change in culture as a whole, the most popular social dances are based on traditional ways of moving but use Western music in new ways.
