Flint - Uninhabited Coral Island
In the southwest Pacific Ocean, 400 miles northwest of Tahiti, lies Flint Island, the southernmost coral island in Kiribati's Southern Line Islands. The formation rises to a level height of 22 feet, has a land area of 1 square mile, and is shaped like an elongated diamond with dimensions of 2.5 miles by 0.5 miles with multiple brackish lagoons.
The densely forested atoll once produced copra and guano. Europeans first saw it in 1801, and the United States officially claimed it in 1856. Coconut trees (for copra) were introduced in the 1870s and rapidly displaced much of the local vegetation.
Guano exports ceased in 1893. In 1972, Flint Island joined the Gilbert and Ellice Islands Colony, and in 1979, it became a member of the newly independent Kiribati. No one lives there permanently.

Kiribati claims some of the islands, while the United States claims others as unincorporated territories. French Polynesia is 1,600 miles (2,600 km) away northwest of the Line Islands. They are broken up into Northern, Central, and Southern groupings and have a total land area of 193 square miles.
All islands are coral formations, but only six are atolls since they feature lagoons. Politically, the Northern Line Islands include Kingman Reef, Palmyra Atoll, and Jarvis Island, all unincorporated U.S. territory, Teraina Island, Tabuaeran, and Kiritimati atolls, all portions of Kiribati since that nation's independence in 1979.
The Central and Southern Line Islands, which include the islands of Malden and Starbuck in the Central Group and Vostok and Flint in the Southern group, are also a part of Kiribati. Except for the atolls of Kiritimati, Tabuaeran, and Teraina Island, there are no permanent inhabitants.
